About this place
Masuichi Observatory is a clifftop viewpoint on the southwest side of the Etomo Peninsula in Muroran, and one of the city's eight designated scenic views. It looks down on Masuichi beach and its rock stacks, and across Uchiura Bay towards Mount Komagatake on a clear day.
The viewpoint has its own small car park and toilets, so you can drive right up to it. Muroran's other viewpoints are spread around the same peninsula, and a precise point saves guessing which turning belongs to which one.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Masuichi Observatory?
- The mapcode is 159 219 876*77, pointing at a spot in 北海道. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 42.318923, 140.948259. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
