About this place
Jigokudani, or Hell Valley, is the steaming volcanic valley directly above Noboribetsu Onsen in southwestern Hokkaido and the source of the town's hot spring water. A boardwalk leads from the entrance through sulphur-yellow ground and venting steam to Tessen Pond, a bubbling hot spring.
Noboribetsu-Higashi IC on the Do-o Expressway is about ten minutes away. The Jigokudani car park (about 160 spaces) is paid, and the ticket also covers the Oyunuma car park further up the hill on the same day; that upper road is closed in winter. The boardwalk is lit from sunset until 21:30 all year.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Noboribetsu Hell Valley?
- The mapcode is 603 288 368*60, pointing at a spot in 北海道. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 42.497528, 141.148667. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
