About this place

Goryokaku is the star-shaped bastion fort the shogunate built at the very end of the Edo period on what was then the edge of Hakodate, and the site of the last battle of the Boshin War. It is now a park and a Special Historic Site, with the Hakodate Magistrate's Office partly reconstructed inside the walls and around 1,500 cherry trees along the moats.

Neither the park nor the neighbouring Goryokaku Tower has a car park, so use one of the paid public or private lots in the surrounding streets; the tower's observation deck is where the star shape actually reads. The gates into the fort grounds open at 5:00 and close at 19:00 from April to October and at 18:00 in winter.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Goryokaku Park?
The mapcode is 86 166 278*13, pointing at a spot in 北海道. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 41.796900, 140.757156. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
