About this place
Kotohira-gu, known as Konpira-san, is the shrine on Mt Zozu above the town of Kotohira in Kagawa, and one of Shikoku’s best-known pilgrimages. The main hall is reached by 785 stone steps from the bottom of the approach, with another 583 to the inner shrine.
The mapcode points at the main hall on the mountainside, which you cannot drive to. The shrine has no parking of its own and asks drivers to set their navigation to JR Kotohira Station rather than the shrine, because routing straight to the shrine leads onto restricted roads. Park in one of the town’s paid lots near the station or the foot of the approach, then walk up.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Kotohira-gu?
- The mapcode is 77 352 613*02, pointing at a spot in 香川県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 34.183988, 133.809390. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
