About this place

Tokyo Skytree is the 634 m broadcasting tower in Oshiage, Sumida Ward, rising out of the Tokyo Skytree Town complex with the Solamachi shopping mall at its base. It is one of the easiest Tokyo landmarks to find from the road, but not one of the easiest to drive into.

Skytree Town has two paid car parks, a multi-storey on the west side and an underground one on the east, open 7:30 to 23:00 with entry until 22:00. Vehicle limits are 2.1 m high, 1.9 m wide and 5.0 m long, which rules out some larger rental vans. The operator warns that the surrounding roads are extremely congested on weekends and holidays.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Tokyo Skytree?
The mapcode is 742 740*81, pointing at a spot in 東京都. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.710054, 139.810714. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
