About this place

Sensoji is the oldest temple in Tokyo, in Asakusa, Taito Ward, entered through the Kaminarimon gate and the Nakamise shopping street. The mapcode lands just south-west of the main hall, in the middle of the temple’s busiest pedestrian streets.

Sensoji has no car park of its own; the temple directs drivers to the paid car parks around Asakusa. The lanes around Nakamise are crowded with people, so set your navigation to a car park rather than to the temple and walk the last few hundred metres. The main hall is open 6:00 to 17:00 (from 6:30 between October and March).

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Sensoji Temple?
The mapcode is 770 205*04, pointing at a spot in 東京都. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.713403, 139.795526. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
