About this place

Meiji Jingu is the Shinto shrine to Emperor Meiji in Shibuya Ward, Tokyo, set in a large forest between Harajuku and Yoyogi. The main shrine sits roughly in the middle of the grounds, about ten minutes’ walk from any entrance, and the mapcode points there.

Cars can only enter through the Yoyogi (north) entrance, not from Harajuku or Sangubashi, so do not let the navigation steer you to the Harajuku side. The shrine itself advises entering Yoyogi 1-1-2 as the navigation address, because the official address does not route well. The car park can fill to the point where entry is refused, and the access road inside the grounds is slow-speed, with the occasional tanuki crossing.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Meiji Jingu Shrine?
The mapcode is 609 520*27, pointing at a spot in 東京都. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.674842, 139.699627. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
