About this place

Kobe Harborland is the waterfront shopping and leisure district immediately south of JR Kobe Station, opened in 1992 on the site of a former rail freight yard and factories. The umie shopping complex and umie Mosaic are its core, and Meriken Park and Kobe Port Tower face it across the water.

There are a dozen car parks in the district with about 4,200 spaces between them, the biggest being the umie multi-storey (1,800 cars). Most have a 2.0–2.1 m height limit; the umie Mosaic car park takes vehicles up to 3.4 m, which matters if you have rented a van. The mapcode points at the middle of the district, so pick the car park first and navigate to that.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Kobe Harborland?
The mapcode is 12 336 029*23, pointing at a spot in 兵庫県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 34.678512, 135.180311. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
