About this place

Arima Onsen is one of Japan’s oldest hot spring towns, tucked behind the Rokko mountains in Kita Ward, Kobe. It is known for two kinds of water: the iron-rich, rust-coloured kinsen and the clear ginsen. There are public bathhouses for each.

The mapcode points at Arima Onsen Station on the Kobe Electric Railway, at the bottom of the town; the old lanes above it are narrow and steep, so park near here and walk up. There are several paid lots, including the town’s Arima Onsen car park and the ropeway car park, and most inns have their own parking. By expressway, come off at Nishinomiya-kita IC on the Chugoku Expressway or the Arimaguchi exit on the Hanshin Kita-Kobe line.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Arima Onsen?
The mapcode is 12 764 476*45, pointing at a spot in 兵庫県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 34.799256, 135.246275. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
