About this place
Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park is in a steep, steaming valley in Yamanouchi, northern Nagano, at about 850 metres, where wild Japanese macaques come down to bathe in a hot spring pool in winter. The ground is under snow for roughly a third of the year.
No road reaches the park: from either car park it is about a 35-minute walk on an unpaved trail with steps and slopes. The free lower car park is at Kanbayashi Onsen, and the mapcode lands in that area, not at the park itself. A paid upper lot is reached by a narrow forest road from Shibu Onsen, but that road closes in winter, and from December to April web-ticket holders get priority entry.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.
How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park?
- The mapcode is 341 818 200*82, pointing at a spot in 長野県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 36.729936, 138.444076. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
