About this place

The Tottori Sand Dunes stretch along the Sea of Japan coast just north of Tottori City and are among the largest dunes in Japan open to visitors, part of them a designated natural monument. The best-known ridge, the Umanose, rises about 47 m from the hollow below it. The mapcode points at the visitor area by the main entrance.

The dunes are about 15 minutes from Tottori IC on the Tottori Expressway and about 20 minutes from Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport. Park at the main entrance and walk in; there is no shade anywhere on the sand, and the prefecture warns of heatstroke risk whenever the temperature passes 20°C, not only in summer, so take water and a hat.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Tottori Sand Dunes?
The mapcode is 125 733 804*72, pointing at a spot in 鳥取県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.543764, 134.237461. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
