About this place
Himeji Castle stands on a hill in the centre of Himeji, Hyogo. It is one of the few Japanese castles whose original keep survives, and both a National Treasure and a UNESCO World Heritage site; its white plastered walls give it the nickname White Heron Castle.
The mapcode points at the main keep, which is inside the castle walls. The usual place to park is the city-run Otemon car park (555 cars), about ten minutes’ walk from the castle and a minute from Koko-en garden; there are several other city lots around the castle, including an underground one by Otemae-dori.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Himeji Castle?
- The mapcode is 24 308 318*65, pointing at a spot in 兵庫県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 34.839331, 134.694020. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
