About this place

Cape Hedo is the northernmost point of Okinawa Island, in Kunigami Village inside Yanbaru National Park. Its cliffs of uplifted coral face the meeting of the Pacific and the East China Sea, and on a clear day Yoron Island, in Kagoshima Prefecture, is visible on the horizon.

This is the far end of the island: about an hour by car from Kyoda IC, the northern end of the Okinawa Expressway, and further still from Naha. The free car park takes around 70 cars and the mapcode sits right by it, next to the visitor centre with its rooftop viewing deck.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Cape Hedo?
The mapcode is 728 736 143*78, pointing at a spot in 沖縄県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 26.871801, 128.262900. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
