About this place

Amanohashidate is the 3.6 km pine-covered sandbar across the mouth of Miyazu Bay in Miyazu, northern Kyoto Prefecture, counted as one of Japan’s three classic scenic views. The mapcode points at the Monju side at the southern end, near Amanohashidate Station and the car parks there.

The sandbar has two ends with different approaches. For the southern Monju side (Chionji temple, the View Land lookout), leave the Kyoto-Jukan Expressway at Miyazu-Amanohashidate IC; for the northern Fuchu side (Kasamatsu Park, Kono Shrine), use Yosa-Amanohashidate IC and Routes 176 and 178. Most car parks on both sides are paid, including the city-run Amanohashidate car park in Monju (about 220 spaces), which charges more during Golden Week and Obon.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Amanohashidate?
The mapcode is 197 201 773*32, pointing at a spot in 京都府. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.560361, 135.178657. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
