About this place

Shirarahama is the white-sand beach at the heart of Shirahama in southern Wakayama, a crescent about 620 m long between the onsen hotels and the sea. Its quartz sand has been topped up with sand imported from Australia since 1989, and it has been twinned with Waikiki Beach since 2000.

The mapcode points at the road behind the middle of the beach, next to the beach police box and a car park. Wakayama’s tourism board lists a 60-space car park with seasonal pricing, which does not go far on a summer weekend, so arrive early in the swimming season. From the Nanki-Shirahama IC on the Kisei Expressway it is about 15 minutes.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Shirarahama Beach?
The mapcode is 184 041 263*48, pointing at a spot in 和歌山県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 33.680803, 135.345468. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
