About this place

Okama is the crater lake of Goshikidake in the Zao range, on the Miyagi side of the Miyagi-Yamagata border. It is viewed from the Katta-dake summit area, reached by the Zao Echo Line and then the short Zao Highline toll road, and is only visible when the summit is clear of cloud.

The mapcode lands about a kilometre south of the lake itself, in the Katta-dake summit area at the top of the Zao Highline; the lake is viewed from the rim on foot. Both the Echo Line and the Highline close for winter, from early November to late April, and the Highline charges a toll.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Okama Crater Lake (Mt. Zao)?
The mapcode is 569 428 898*66, pointing at a spot in 宮城県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 38.127726, 140.446194. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
