About this place
Ginzan Onsen is a small hot spring town in Obanazawa, Yamagata, that grew up around a silver mine. Its inns line both banks of the Ginzan River, the centre is pedestrian-only, and the gas lamps along the river at night, especially under snow, are what draws most visitors.
Cars cannot drive into the onsen street, so you park below it and walk or take the paid shuttle. In winter the town has run park-and-ride with timed entry and the village car park closed, and Route 347 from the Furukawa side is closed for the season, so check the official site before heading up. Obanazawa IC is about 30 minutes away.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.
How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Ginzan Onsen?
- The mapcode is 720 857 614*76, pointing at a spot in 山形県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 38.575187, 140.517356. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
