About this place
Matsushima is the bay northeast of Sendai scattered with around 260 pine-covered islands, counted as one of the Three Views of Japan. The shore at Matsushima-Kaigan holds Zuiganji temple, the little Godaido hall on its own islet and the sightseeing boat piers, all within walking distance.
Matsushima-Kaigan IC on the Sanriku Expressway is about five minutes from the shore via Route 45. Godaido has no parking and the waterfront is compact, so leave the car in one of the town's paid lots near the shore and walk between the temple, the hall and the piers.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Matsushima?
- The mapcode is 110 412 704*10, pointing at a spot in 宮城県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 38.367849, 141.058996. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
