About this place
Lake Towada is a large caldera lake on the Aomori-Akita border, and Yasumiya is the lakeside village on its southern shore where the sightseeing boats, Towada Shrine and the Maiden statue are. It is the natural base for the lake and for driving down to the Oirase Gorge.
Yasumiya has paid car parks at the north and south ends of the village; the Maiden statue and Towada Shrine are a five to ten minute walk from them, and the boat ticket office is beside the south lot. The lake road continues on to Nenokuchi, where the Oirase Gorge begins.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Lake Towada (Yasumiya)?
- The mapcode is 612 332 112*20, pointing at a spot in 青森県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 40.428800, 140.894272. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
