Ashura no Nagare is the best-known stretch of the Oirase Gorge, the 14 km stream that drains Lake Towada from Nenokuchi down to Yakeyama in Towada City, Aomori. Here the water runs fast and white between mossy rocks, and the whole gorge is a designated Special Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument.
Route 102 runs right alongside the stream and roadside space is very limited, so the usual approach is to park at the Ishigedo car park downstream and walk up the riverside path, using the local bus to get back. The road is subject to periodic private-car restrictions in peak season with park-and-ride shuttles, so check before driving in at the height of the autumn colours.
