About this place
Hirosaki Castle was built in 1611 as the seat of the Tsugaru clan and now forms Hirosaki Park in the centre of Hirosaki, Aomori. The keep, turrets and gates are Important Cultural Properties, and the moated park is listed among Japan's 100 best cherry blossom spots.
The mapcode lands on the south side of the park. During the cherry blossom festival the surrounding streets are heavily congested: the underground car park at the City Tourist Centre opens 24 hours, and temporary free parking on the Iwaki riverbank is a 15 to 20 minute walk away. Parts of the honmaru can be closed for stone wall and keep works, so check the park's site for what is open.

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.
How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Hirosaki Castle?
- The mapcode is 71 071 037*72, pointing at a spot in 青森県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 40.603051, 140.465298. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
