About this place
Kotoku-in is the temple in Hase, Kamakura, that houses the Great Buddha, the bronze Amida figure that has sat in the open air since its hall was lost centuries ago. It is on the Shonan coast south of Yokohama, close to Hase Station on the Enoden line.
The temple has no car park of its own, so you will be using one of the paid lots around Hase. The roads into Hase are narrow and back up badly on weekends and in the holiday seasons; many visitors park further out and come in on the Enoden, which stops about seven minutes’ walk from the gate.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Kamakura Great Buddha (Kotoku-in)?
- The mapcode is 8 214 560*26, pointing at a spot in 神奈川県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.316814, 139.535744. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
