About this place

Irabu Ohashi Bridge runs 3,540 m from the Hirara port area of Miyako Island to Irabu Island and is the longest toll-free bridge in Japan. It opened in January 2015, replacing the ferry, and rises in the middle to give ships 27 m of clearance.

The mapcode points at the Miyako end in Hirara, where you join the bridge. Parking on the bridge is prohibited, though drivers regularly stop mid-span for photos. Do not stop there; take your photos from the ends instead.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Irabu Ohashi Bridge?
The mapcode is 310 420 839*06, pointing at a spot in 沖縄県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 24.795080, 125.256479. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
