About this place
Oshino Hakkai is a cluster of eight spring-fed ponds in Oshino Village, Yamanashi, between Lake Yamanaka and Lake Kawaguchi. The water comes from Mount Fuji snowmelt filtered through lava, and on a clear day the mountain stands directly behind the village.
The ponds sit in a working village with narrow lanes and no through parking, so you park on the edge and walk in. The mapcode here points at the Ikemoto lot next to Wakuike in the village centre — the practical place to stop, rather than the ponds themselves.

This site covers 30 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot, the restaurant you booked — those need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.
How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix — that is fine, it only refines the pin.
Where these coordinates come from
This location arrived by way of a shortened Google Maps link a user had been given, which is a common way for a place to reach a traveller with no usable name attached. The redirect target and the Google POI position were checked independently before the coordinates were accepted.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Oshino Hakkai?
- The mapcode is 161 130 850*87, pointing at a spot in 山梨県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 35.461130, 138.833046. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
