About this place

Hiraodai is a limestone karst plateau in the hills of southern Kitakyushu, spreading over about 12 km² at 370–710 m and protected as a national Natural Monument. Its grassland is dotted with white limestone pillars that look like grazing sheep, and limestone caves such as Senbutsu cave open beneath it.

The mapcode points at the Hiraodai Nature Observation Centre, the usual starting point for walks on the plateau. Prefectural Road 28 crosses the area and links it to Route 322 towards Kokura and Route 201 towards Yukuhashi; the last part of the drive is a narrow climb, so take it slowly.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Hiraodai Karst Plateau?
The mapcode is 16 017 348*07, pointing at a spot in 福岡県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 33.756430, 130.894435. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
