About this place

Dazaifu Tenmangu is the shrine in Dazaifu, south-east of Fukuoka City, dedicated to the scholar Sugawara no Michizane, and one of Japan’s most visited Tenmangu shrines. Students come in their thousands to pray before exams. A shop-lined approach leads from Dazaifu Station to the shrine gates.

The mapcode points at the shrine precinct. The shrine lists a large parking centre of about 850 spaces, roughly seven minutes’ walk along the approach, plus many coin parks nearby. At busy times entry to that car park may be limited to traffic coming from the Gojo intersection side, so expect queues at New Year and in exam season and follow the on-site guidance.

Need a mapcode for somewhere else?

This site covers 167 places. Your hotel, the rental return lot and the restaurant you booked need mapcodes too, and they are not on this list. The app converts any Japanese address or place name, in English, Korean, Chinese or Japanese. Free.

How to enter this in your car navigation

  1. On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
  2. Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
  3. Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
  4. Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.

Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions

What is the mapcode for Dazaifu Tenmangu?
The mapcode is 55 364 135*32, pointing at a spot in 福岡県. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 33.521308, 130.535256. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
What is a mapcode?
A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
