About this place
Cape Kamui is the narrow headland at the tip of the Shakotan Peninsula, on Hokkaido's Sea of Japan coast west of Otaru. A ridge-top path runs out to the point above water famous for its 'Shakotan Blue', ending in view of Kamui Rock standing offshore.
Cars stop at the car park by the Kamui Banya shop, and the walk from there to the tip takes about 20 minutes each way. The entrance gate from Route 229 into the car park has opening hours that change month by month. The path starts at the Nyonin Kinsei gate, which is closed in strong wind, so check the Shakotan Town site on a blowy day before making the drive. From 5 October 2026 to early April 2027 the path beyond that gate is closed for construction work, so the tip cannot be reached.

How to enter this in your car navigation
- On the navigation home screen, choose Destination (目的地).
- Choose Mapcode (マップコード) from the search methods.
- Type the digits, then the asterisk and the last two digits.
- Confirm the map preview shows the right area before you set the route.
Most Japanese rental cars (Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Times, Orix) accept mapcodes. Some older units ignore the *nn suffix. That is fine, because it only refines the pin.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the mapcode for Cape Kamui (Shakotan)?
- The mapcode is 932 583 037*20, pointing at a spot in 北海道. Written as decimal degrees the same point is 43.327860, 140.356654. A navigation unit takes the mapcode in far fewer keystrokes than the coordinates, so enter the code.
- What is a mapcode?
- A mapcode is a short numeric code that identifies a spot in Japan, developed by Denso. Japanese car navigation systems accept it directly, which avoids typing a Japanese address on a Japanese keyboard.
- How do I enter a mapcode in a Japanese rental car?
- On the navigation unit choose Destination (目的地), then Mapcode (マップコード), then type the digits. The two digits after the asterisk are an optional precision suffix; older units simply ignore them.
- What do the digits after the asterisk mean?
- They are a high-resolution suffix that narrows the point to roughly a few metres. Without them the code still resolves, just to a slightly wider area.
